Project History
As director, I became involved in this project in 2001 when Anna, my half-sister, began to tell me the story of her high school basketball team. Since we didn’t grow up in the same cities, I didn’t know what her day to day life was like as a high school student. What I did know about her was that she was a basketball star and that her team was the center of her social life. What I didn’t know was that she was part of a group of players who identified as lesbians and who made up the majority of the team members for the four years she played. The depth of her relationships with the other players and the turbulence of her love affairs and friendships were astonishing considering that she was only 15 at the time, but what impressed me more was the environment the team created that allowed the players to explore and express their sexuality. I knew immediately that this was a moment in her life, and most likely in the other players, that would profoundly affect the rest of their lives.
